Interview: Sonja Jokiniemi on Hmm

Sonja Jokiniemi was interviewed for the Finnish Cultural Institute's website about her performance Hmm.

”Hmm depicts a strange and idiosyncratic world that turns its formal and aural basis into a series of obsessive narratives, existential questions and aural-corporeal rituals. It derives its logic from a dissociative mosaic that eschews any attempt at linear narratives or choreographies. Hmm is a big lump of a curio amongst the chaos of our world."

Residency at STUK in November

Sonja Jokiniemi will work on her new creation RRRRR together with her collaborators: Miguel Angel Melgares, Natalia Dominguez Rangel, Janneke Raaphorst and Jenni Pystynen. Residency at STUK will be the second phase of this creation that will premier in spring 2016 in Dampfzentrale Bern and Kiasma Theatre Helsinki.

RRRRR is looking into a place where one loses meaning and where the world becomes a solitary disconnected experience within a mesh of over stimulus and disembodied language. Fragmentation and derailment work as choreographic starting points.

She looks into contemporary technology, construction of fantasies, derailed language practices and obsessive relations to things, beings and ghosts. Her attempt is to create a contradictory and confused patchwork of overlaps, narrations and truths.
